The Boldt Company: Helping the World Build Boldly Since 1889

Listen to Podcast Here: The Boldt Company

Founded in 1889 by Martin Boldt in Appleton, Wisconsin, The Boldt Company (Boldt) began as a woodworking business built on values of honesty, reliability, and craftsmanship. Today, the company stands as a construction leader across multiple industries, including healthcare, industrial, manufacturing, education, renewable energy, and commercial sectors. Now under fourth-generation ownership and partially employee-owned, Boldt continues to uphold its founding principles while growing its capabilities and expertise.

Boldt's success is driven by its skilled union tradespeople and dedicated office administrative support teams, all of whom work together to deliver exceptional construction services. Known for prioritizing relationships, safety, and innovative approaches like Lean construction, Boldt also leads the way in sustainable building with many LEED® Platinum-certified projects under its belt.

The company offers a wide range of services, including construction delivery methods, integrated Lean project delivery, preconstruction, prefabrication, real estate development, and self-perform construction. Specializing in sustainable construction and virtual design, Boldt's approach is bold not just in its projects but in how it nurtures its staff and capitalizes on opportunities.

Boldt’s Cloquet Office: Deep Roots in the Community

Boldt’s Cloquet office, opened in 1978, originally focused on serving the pulp and paper industry but has since expanded its expertise across multiple sectors. The office is known for its work in industrial, institutional, and commercial industries. Whether it's healthcare, education, or power generation facilities, Boldt plays a vital role in the growth and development of the region.

In Cloquet, it’s nearly impossible not to encounter a Boldt-built structure. Their projects include significant contributions like the expansion of Community Memorial Hospital, the Carlton County Community Services building, the Cloquet Library renovation, and the construction of the Cloquet Skatepark, Northwoods Credit Union, Members Cooperative Credit Union, and more. Boldt’s touch can even be seen in local recreational spaces, such as the hockey shelter and the Stowell commercial strip mall.

Beyond construction, Boldt is actively engaged in the community, organizing the Cloquet Clean-up Day and participating in events with organizations like United Way, Cloquet Education Foundation, and First Witness. The company places a strong emphasis on volunteerism, supporting employees with volunteer time off to give back to the community.

Building Partnerships and Solutions

At its core, Boldt’s Cloquet office is dedicated to one thing: building. From installing and maintaining production equipment for industrial clients like mining and pulp/paper facilities to remodeling and expanding healthcare, finance, and education institutions, Boldt’s versatility is a hallmark of its success. Power generation facilities also fall under their area of expertise, showcasing their breadth of industry knowledge.

A key differentiator for Boldt is its self-performing workforce, which provides a unique advantage to project owners. This hands-on approach allows Boldt to offer guidance from a builder’s perspective throughout the project’s lifecycle, ensuring the highest quality and efficiency.

“We value partnership most of all in a good customer because it leads to more enjoyable and better outcomes,” shared Slade DeZeler, Operations Manager at the Cloquet office. With a career at Boldt that began in 1995, DeZeler’s journey reflects the company’s culture of mentorship and growth, having risen through the ranks from building trades to his current leadership role.

“Our people are remarkable. Words like smart, humble, hardworking, dedicated, collaborative, and passionate come to mind. All of these qualities make us united as a team, nimble to respond to changes, and curious to solve challenges. Our team members each bring something unique, making us a more comprehensive group,” said DeZeler.
